Population Growth Rate: A Matter of National Concern, Says Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry
Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, emphasized the alarming rate of population growth in Pakistan, calling for a collective effort from parliamentarians, political parties, and media to address this critical issue. Speaking at a seminar held on the occasion of World Population Day, Dr. Chaudhry underscored that the presence of representatives from all political parties at the event signifies the importance of the matter, which has become a national issue. Dr. Chaudhry highlighted the growing strain on resources due to population growth, revealing that Pakistan's population has increased sevenfold since 1950. He pointed out that while Pakistan is primarily an agricultural country, the rapid population expansion has altered the country's landscape, with rural areas previously dominated by fields now being replaced by housing societies. He attributed this transformation directly to the unchecked population growth. The Minister also drew attention to the fact that many developed countries have successfully implemented measures to control population growth, leading to a reduction in their population sizes. Ironically, some of these countries are now advocating for population growth again. Dr. Chaudhry stressed the critical role of political parties and parliamentarians in controlling population growth. He noted the silence surrounding this issue on social media platforms, where discussions on various topics are frequent, but population control is rarely mentioned. Similarly, he pointed out that while television talk shows cover almost every subject, population growth rarely gets the attention it deserves. The Minister further emphasized that over 50% of Pakistan's population comprises young people, with a steadily decreasing number of senior citizens due to limited healthcare facilities. He urged youth, who are often engrossed in social media activities like TikTok, to actively participate in efforts to control the population growth rate. Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry concluded by commending Federal Minister for Health, Mr. Mustafa Kamal, for organizing the seminar, recognizing it as a valuable initiative to bring attention to this crucial issue.
